ReCell team members take home R&D 100 Award for EverBatt

CLEVELAND, October 29, 2019 – Technologies developed by researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and partner organizations have won nine 2019 R&D 100 awards. The awards program, sometimes called the “Oscars of Innovation,” honors revolutionary ideas in science and technology and the innovators behind them.

Argonne submitted 12 technologies, eight of which were named as finalists. Argonne scientists contributed to four other entries that were submitted by other DOE laboratories and also named as finalists. The technologies chosen span three out of six possible award categories: Mechanical/Materials, Process/Prototyping, and Software/Services.

ReCell’s director Jeff Spangenberger and chief scientist Linda Gaines were among the Argonne awardees for the following winning project:

EverBatt: Argonne’s novel closed-loop battery recycling model
Qiang Dai, Jeff Spangenberger, Shabbir Ahmed, Linda Gaines, Jarod Kelly, Michael Wang

EverBatt is a closed-loop battery life-cycle model that helps address the growing national need for responsibly and sustainably handling the rising number of spent batteries. The model helps stakeholders better understand the cost and environmental impacts of battery recycling and accelerates the development of a more sustainable battery supply chain, which is critical to America’s energy security. In addition to comparing different recycling scenarios, EverBatt identifies cost and environmental hotspots throughout the life cycle of a battery. It also helps to direct and validate battery recycling research and development efforts and overcome potential barriers to process commercialization.

Argonne scientists have been awarded over 130 R&D 100 Awards since the competition first began in 1964. Past winners also include Fortune 500 companies, other national laboratories, academic institutions and smaller companies.

Argonne awardees were among 100 chosen by an independent panel of more than 40 well-respected industry leaders.
